Vampire Weekend- “White Sky” Listen to it here.

Contra, Vampire Weekend’s second album, will be released on January 12, 2010, but it seems like before it is even leaked the band will hand out all the songs. Personally, I’m not complaining because it fixes my two issues: one, my love for Vampire Weekend and two, my hate for waiting. The only issue is the newest track that they gave up isn’t really “new” at all. If you are a follower of Vampire Weekend you would know that “White Sky” has been played by VW through festivals and concerts, which is why it sounds more like their debut  album than “Cousins” or “Horchata.” With an arpeggiated piano chord and plinky guitar “White Sky” soars as the best “leak” from Contra yet.

Mary J Blige Ft. Jazmine Sullivan- “Gonna Make it” Listen to it here.

When I first heard this song, I immediately played 20 other times, which shows how quickly this song gets implanted into your membrane. The chorus is reminiscent to “this is the song that never ends”, but regardless I can see this being a number one for Mary J Blige. It was almost genius to have Jazmine Sullivan on this track; the passing of the torch from one “soul sista” to another. (By the way while typing this up, I’ve listened to it 3 times more).

Drake- “Fear” So Far Gone Ep

leave a comment »

What is the purpose of giving out a CD that everyone has already gotten for free? I think Drake says it the best: “Buzz so big, I could probably sell a blank disk/When my album drop, bitches will buy it for the picture
/And niggas will buy it too and claim they got it for they sis.” Here is the only track that isn’t in your So far Gone repertoire.

Could “Last Train to Paris” be the most anticipated album of the year?

leave a comment »

No. I don’t want to be a hater, but there’s no way Diddy could pull “most anticipated”; he’s been in the game too long. But it definitely could be the most talked about album. There have been two tracks that have been released from  Last Train to Paris,”Angels” and “Love Come Down”. And guess what? They’re not half bad!

“Angels” seems to be the lead single from Dirty Money (Diddy, Dawn Richards, and Kalenna) and the most different track from Diddy’s previous catalog. The word different is a bit of an understatement. In terms of Diddy and his prior music, he’s gone straight 808’s and Heartbreak, which will be the album most compared to Diddy’s.”Angels” begins with a timeless beat and a timeless verse from Diddy’s personal angel, Notorious B.I.G. Some seconds later Diddy breaks through with an auto-tuned “Came from heaven just to sing a song for you.” What happens next is an emotional song about lost love.

Below is the trailer to “Angels” and the two singles released.

Drake Feat. Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Eminem- “Forever”

leave a comment »

Last year we had “Swagger Like Us”, this year the Final Four has been changed. Jay-Z and T.I. have been traded in for Drake and Eminem. Not quite sure if it has the “making of a legend” feel, but Drake’s hook is decent and the rhymes are okay. I won’t give my personal opinion on who one. That, I’ll leave up to you.

“Reminder” and “Venus vs. Mars”

with 2 comments

Poor Jay. He seemed to have control over everything Blueprint 3. He released some tracks that didn’t make the cut, in the beginning of the hype, just to tease us. The “D.O.A.” video premiered on the B.E.T. awards just as planned. Even the premiere of his 2nd single “Run This Town” was controlled by Jay-Z. Then “Off That” leaked. Okay, understandable, Jay-Z dropped the ball a bit, or maybe it was planned by Jigga all along.  The same can’t be said about “The Reminder” and “Venus vs. Mars” (both Timbaland tracks) being leaked almost back to back. I had hope in Jay and the Blueprint 3 that it would be the first album not to have any leaks. I guess not even the King of NYC can defeat the interweb.

Glass Candy-“Geto Boys” mp3

I have a lot of musical phases. Throughout my short existence I’ve gone through indie rock, classic, techno, hip hop, house, island, acoustic and now back to house/techno. This next band that I’m going to introduce you to wasn’t the breakthrough artist that made me get into techno in the first place, but they did help to develop my love for all things beat-y and groove-y. Here is a track from the Deep Gems album by the Portland group Glass Candy.
