Hurtin’ for some Jerkin’

with 3 comments

Every hour, someone, somewhere in the United States is in his or her basement concocting the next big dance craze. The first form of these modern day “Hokey-pokeys” began in 2006 with DJ Unk’s “Walk It Out.”  The next phenomenon, from New York, asked its dancers to “let it rain, then clear it out” if they wanted to do the “Chicken Noodle Soup.” Then in 2007 the lord of all dances appeared by the name of “Crank that (Soulja Boy).” It had infants who couldn’t even crawl yet “you”ing for months at a time. Today, there is a new dance phenomenon oozing out of the west coast by the name of Jerkin’.

If one was to ask how to explain jerkin’ it would be extremely difficult. The best way to describe it is by producing a recipe from its many influences. First, you must add a slice of jukin’, which is a Chicago born dance that requires its dancers to move their feet so quickly it soon becomes a blur. Then you must add a dash of river dancing (yes, river dancing). Next, add a splash of the running man and there you have it…jerkin’!

Jerkin’ came out of the woodworks from northern Californian high school students who spared some time from skateboarding, texting, myspacing, facebooking, creating videos on YouTube, producing music, and all those things that the adolescence do today to create this modern form of break-dancing. The jerkin’ community often look like their 80’s counterparts, wearing skittle-colored jeans, retro sneakers, and throwback jersey’s. They’re the epitome of 80’s cool.

One of the breakthrough jerkin’ squads to date is the GGPR boys a.k.a. the Go Go Power Ranger$ (that’s how they spell it). Apparently, being fearless is one of the requirements to be apart of their crew. From the middle of the street to the roof of a stranger’s house, there is no limit to where they won’t jerk.  Their videos have been watched my millions of people on YouTube and have even caught the eye of Chris Brown who appears in one their videos doing his own version of the dance.

Jerkin’ has spread from California to become a nationwide symptom. Type in “jerkin’” on YouTube and hundreds of videos will appear of kids putting their own spin on the dance. The only thing that has hindered it from being a pandemic is the lack of media coverage and a catchy song to go with it. But as soon as those two things occur everyone will be jerkin’ til it hurts.
