Breaking the Talent Code

leave a comment »

Self-dscorvery and self-growth has been a very important aspect of my life since day one. I remember going to acmelove.com as an adolescent to find ways on how to flirt and attract the opposite sex. Next I evolved into an avid subscriber to askmen.com to learn how to act like a “man”.  In the media I’ve always found inspiration stories that involve a rags to riches story. Some may say that EVERYONE is into those type of stories, but it became an obsession with me.

I always knew that one can become whatever one hopes to become, but as an “adult” I’ve come to realize that you must work for it. All the people that I look up to (Muhammad Ali, Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr. , Bruce Lee) were not born being amazing. They practiced  and trained themselves to become the best at their chosen paths.

The Talent Code, a book by Daniel Coyle, will hopefully give me more insight on how to do that myself or atleast give me more motivation. I haven’t finished reading it yet–just finished Chapter 1– but I do feel inspired. This post is for me to quickly put down in writing my feelings about what I just read so that I don’t forget them.

Things to remember:

  1. Greatness comes from mistakes. In other words, some people may be naturally good at some certain skill, but that doesn’t mean from day one that they are the best in the world. They will have challenges that they need to overcome to become better. It is only  when they pull through the hardships that they can truly learn. Someone who has it easy is quick to quit when hardships come along. It is those who have to struggle who see each obstacle as a stepping stone.
  2. Street smarts over book smarts. Books are important; I don’t want to bash on those lovely pages and indexes, but real life experiences always win. The book gives an example of two groups who were told to study for the same test. One group were told to read the studied material 4 times, while the other group read it only once but were tested three times. The groups that was tested 3 times ended up scoring monumentally better than their book smart counter parts.

That is what I learned so far. More to be added later.

Regina Spektor- Laughing With’

leave a comment »

Regina Spektor has always struck a chord with me. It began when I saw her stop-motion music video “Us”. Just like George Washington, I can not tell a lie; what most attracted me to her was her quirky beauty.  Her skyscraper cheek bones ma de a gateway to her rosy red lips. Not to mention her whiter than white skin tone. She was a modern day Snow White with an even lovelier voice.  It’s been years since that video was released but my Spektor love has not. Her new video, “Laughing With”, is nothing special, but lyrics evoke a bit of inner analyzing of the importance of God in our iCulture.

Nike Blazer x Air Force 1 Hybrid Sneakers

I’m not too sure about these shoes. They sort of look dirty, although they are obviously clean. I think the problem is the outsole, but they’re still pretty cool.

Wale- Chillin’

“Nah Nah Nah Nah! Nah Nah Nah Nah! Hey Hey Hey! Goodbye-ye-ye.” The beauty. The sound. The African. My man Wale is about to explode on the world (no homo lol). If you don’t believe check out the latest issue of GQ. But this blog post isn’t meant to explain how dope of a M.C. he is (well not totally). It’s to sort of “premiere” a sneak preview of his new single “Chillin'” Feat. Lady Gaga (Note the M.I.A. swagger jacking by Gaga). So without further hesitation…

Things I Don’t Understand: Lady Gaga Hype

with 3 comments

First off, let me start by stating the fact that I’m not a hater. I don’t just come across things that are different from my perspective and just hate them. I try to understand where this dislike comes from; I even give them a chance sometimes and was proven wrong. For example, when the Arcade fire was garnering all this praise about being so creative and bringing a new interesting sound to the world of music; I was quick to blow them off. I listened to a few songs and didn’t understand the hype. My misunderstanding, though, didn’t stop all the critics love for the Canadian band. So, I gave them one more try to understand what the hoop-la was all about. And after laying on my concrete mattress in my dorm room and closing my eyes, I have Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible one more go through.

Afterwards, I felt like finally the apple had hit and I understood why people liked them so much. I, in turn, would download Funeral as well and Arcade Fire would soon be one of the most played artists in my iTunes.

But with every once of my being I can’t quite understand Lady Gaga’s fame. To me, if anything, she is a musical terrorist. Hijacking the best that out current major female artists have to offer and with all that creating a mediocre prototype. She’s taken Madonna’s and Christina Aguilera( circa X-Tina) overtly sexual behavior and tried to capitalize on that. Musically, she’s taken a lot from M.I.A., Gwen Stefani, and Fergie, and branded it as “GaGa”-ness. All her songs are mediocre pop songs. I, personally, love good pop songs. I am not ashamed to have Pieces of Me or Womanizer in my iTunes because they are actually good songs. “Just Dance” is a lame disco beat with even lamer lyrics. “Poker Face”, her latest single, is a little better but that only has to do with the production. The lyrics still have nothing that provokes any emotion from me, except for bewilderment that this song is one of the top 10 songs in the U.S.

The only thing I can truly say is her own creation is her fashion sense. It truly is new and interesting. She looks like a futuristic pin up model  and it’s fine for people to see that as fascinating.  But everything else…really? Okay, I’m done with my rant. Who knows though. I may end up liking her just like Arcade Fire. She is featured in Wale’s, my new favorite rapper, single Chillin’.

Nike Blazer Hi Lite Tier Zero

leave a comment »

Straight blazing. Those are the words that come to mind when eyeing Nike’s new Blazer Lite Tier Zero collection. The most important quality of these shoes is  its simplicity. While most companies are trying to be innovative by adding flyers, straps, and all sorts of ridiculousness, Nike has tried to stick with a simple design in most if its shoes. Here are the 3 main colorways from the collection and the Barcelona.
